Teapots and Coffee Shops

Picture
Tea drinking and cake eating whilst having a bit of a scribble
First things first, I don't do coffee... the smell and taste are a bit grim. Tea on the other hand is a glorious thing.... don't think I've ever said 'No' to a cup if offered one. Normal tea though.... no infusions here. Anyway, this is me in coffee shops, drinking tea and writing things down...

Fancy!

I've gone all upmarket. Well, upmarket for me. In a coffee shop in a department store! There's quiet, subdued conversation going on. Shopping bags overflowing with purchases stored neatly on the adjacent chairs. An abundance of heavy coats and scarves abound despite the moderately warm weather. There's even the occasional snood. My presence here has dropped the average age of the customer by about thirty years. There are a lot of older couples sitting together not saying anything. Is this because they're content together in the silence or is it that they've said everything to each other that needs to be said? We will never know. Although looking at some of the faces I don't think you'd happily describe them as 'content'.
There's quite a lot of older gentlemen sitting by themselves. Some are reading a paper, some are on their phone, some are being resuscitated by an ambulance crew. No, that's not true, he was dead when they got here. Is this my future though I ask myself.... sat on my own in a coffee shop thirty years hence. Good word 'hence'.
One of the guys serving on the till is an acquaintance of mine. He's cute in a pocket sized way and was mildly twinkly when he served me with my tea in a sensible pot. I am, historically, useless at the old flirting. But what can you do or say when you've placed your order and there's a queue behind you? I suppose there was an opportunity when I passed over my sausage sandwich over for it to be heated up to make a sausage joke or two. Too late now. The ambulance crew have moved onto someone else now. Looks like it's too late for him too.
Just to clarify, there are no ambulance men. I made them up using the power of my mind. Although that man over there has just collapsed. I'll give 999 a ring. Kidding! He's asleep.
     I think.
